Christina Willems has been in charge of the Brambleville Asylum for the Poor since her father had passed away. It is a duty she loves and has grown comfortable in, but when a fire rises her world is suddenly changed. Forced to leave the Asylum she and all of her charges must find temporary shelter within the town until the home is rebuilt. After finding a place for almost everyone she is still left without anywhere for Tommy, a blind little boy, to stay. With one last hope she reaches out to Levi Jonnson a mill owner who has cut himself off from the town and God. Reluctantly, Levi takes him in hoping someone else would soon offer to keep him instead so he can be alone again. But as time goes by, and the rebuilding of the asylum is met with many setbacks, Levi starts to feel himself growing closer to Tommy Christina and if possible God. He begins to wonder if he has been doing the right thing by shutting people out, and if Christina is feeling anything for him. Meanwhile, after wild accusations and many tests of faith Christina is finding herself questioning God and herself. Has she been doing her duty for others or for selfish reasons? Is their home ever going to be fixed and if so will they be able to return to their home together?
